REAL & SURREAL
ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I have had the good fortune to live, and work as an artist, on the central coast of California since 1970. Over this time I have mostly been known for my surrealistic or visionary paintings, yet I am continually drawn back to paint nature. My style has been described as "photo" or "magic" realism because of the attention I pay to detail; but I simply have a commitment to a basic realistic approach that honors the way nature presents herself to our senses. Realism is never a copying of nature as some might think, there's really no fear that any artist can even come close to natureís ever changing mystery.

For me, realism becomes a honed tool which I can use to cut away the surface layers of what seems to be real, in order to reveal the abstract land of thoughts, feelings and symbolic realities beneath the apparent; what one school of artists called the surrealistic. As a visionary artist I seek to illuminate the invisible worlds of psyche, soul and spirit, or my particular viewpoint of those worlds. In the end it seems that nature and spirit are locked in an eternal dance and our souls are the witnesses of this great drama. I'm always looking for new ways to express what I have seen in both visible and invisible worlds.
